Envision and Engagement + How to Conduct User Interviews | CPE123 Week 7
User Interview
User Interviews are a great way to extract information. To know their needs, requirements, feedback, problems, inside data, suggestions, etc.
Drawbacks of interviewing
- Tend to give insights into what people say they will do, but sometimes it is not actually done.
- Tell a story the way we think something happened rather than how it happened.
- Don't let them create products.
Notetaking types
- Descriptive : See something and write it down.
- Inferential : Use inference to describe observation.
- Evaluative : make judgments from inference and behavior.
Typical topics cover
- Background such as ethnographic data
- Technology
- Product
- Main objectives and motivations
- Pain points
Script Tips
- Begin with explaining the purpose
- Tell how data will be used
- Leading questions to a minimum
- The script is a guide, not a bible.
How to Conduct
- Make interviewees comfortable
- Try to be on time and head in the right direction
- Focus on interviewees not notetaking
- Thank you at the end of the process
Reporting User Interviews tend to provide qualitative data rather than quantitative data. You have to compile results information and present it in easily understandable formats like Word clouds and mind maps.
Prototype
(from : https://moqups.com/)
Envisionment is concerned with making it possible.
It can be in all manner of forms such as stories and scenarios, presentations, sketches, formal models, software prototypes, etc.
They should represent design work to ourselves and others.
A designer should generate multiple design solutions and then whittles them down to the final product.
UI Storyboard
Storyboarding is taken from making a film.
They use a simple cartoon-like structure to represent an interactive experience.
They will allow you to feel the flow of the experience.
Site map
Navigation is the key feature for many systems.
They focus on how people move through to know how people experience.
They can be redrawn many times through the project lifecycle cause navigational structure is one of the main reasons why users turn off your products. All boxes or heading in the site and app must be accessed.
