Envision and Engagement + How to Conduct User Interviews | CPE123 Week 7

User Interview

What are User Interviews?
User Interviews are a great way to extract information. To know their needs, requirements, feedback, problems, inside data, suggestions, etc.

    Drawbacks of interviewing
  • Tend to give insights into what people say they will do, but sometimes it is not actually done.
  • Tell a story the way we think something happened rather than how it happened.
  • Don't let them create products.

    Notetaking types
  • Descriptive : See something and write it down.
  • Inferential : Use inference to describe observation.
  • Evaluative : make judgments from inference and behavior.

    Typical topics cover
  • Background such as ethnographic data
  • Technology
  • Product
  • Main objectives and motivations
  • Pain points

    Script Tips
  • Begin with explaining the purpose
  • Tell how data will be used
  • Leading questions to a minimum
  • The script is a guide, not a bible.

    How to Conduct
  1. Make interviewees comfortable
  2. Try to be on time and head in the right direction
  3. Focus on interviewees not notetaking
  4. Thank you at the end of the process

Reporting User Interviews tend to provide qualitative data rather than quantitative data. You have to compile results information and present it in easily understandable formats like Word clouds and mind maps.

What are Navigation maps?
Navigation is the key feature for many systems.
They focus on how people move through to know how people experience.
They can be redrawn many times through the project lifecycle cause navigational structure is one of the main reasons why users turn off your products.
